Camp Nirvana is a two week residential camp held at Bastyr University, on the shores of Lake Washington near Seattle. The camp is produced by Chamber Music Madness, a non-profit organization founded and directed by Karen Iglitzin. Chamber Music Madness is dedicated to empowering young people through chamber music.
The Faculty:
Irwin Eisenberg, violin, was a member of the St. Louis and Philadelphia Orchestras, and a founding member of the Philadelphia String Quartet. In 1966, the quartet moved to Seattle, and were pioneers of the chamber music scene in the Pacific Northwest. For eight years, Irv directed the Chamber Music Institute at the Olympic Music Festival, the precursor of Camp Nirvana. He lives in Seattle with artist/wife, Teresa Malinowski.
Karen Iglitzin, violin and director, was the 1st violinist of the Philadelphia String Quartet. They performed 80 concerts annually, including tours of South America and India. She was on the faculty at WWU for 12 years, and directed the string program. In 2002, Karen was named “Teacher of the Year” by Chamber Music America. She lives in Seattle with Roger Nelson and their daughter Ariana.
Leslie Hirt Marckx, cello, received her B.A. from WWU and her Masters and Doctorate from the UW with Raymond Davis. She wrote the title article in Strad Magazine of May 2001 on Baroque dance and Bach’s cello suites. She lives in Bellevue with husband Patrick and daughters Olivia and Charlotte.
