Roger Nelson has taught at Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle, Washington since 1979. He conducts the new “Seattle Creative Orchestra”, dedicated to music of living composers, and is a frequent guest conductor and pianist around the Northwest.
Karen Iglitzin was the first violinist of the Philadelphia String Quartet, with whom she toured India, South America, and gave eighty concerts per year in the U.S. She was professor of violin at Western Washington University for eleven years. They spent the 1997-1998 season in China, at the Teacher’s University in the city of Qufu, Shandong Province.
The music on this CD shares some of their experience in China, including works “Splendid Dusk over Fishing Boat”, and “Pastoral Song”, both favorites in China. And Karen drew from a very old folk saga “White-Haired Girl” to create a medley with American and Canadian fiddle tunes. As for the American music, there are a selection of Fiddle Tunes composed by Roger. It’s dance music: waltzes, jigs and reels- some sound Eastern European, others Celtic. They call for improvisation and inventiveness on the part of the performers. To round out this eclectic album, Karen presents the beloved “Meditation from Thais” from the French opera composed by Jules Massenet. And we are treated to the Chinese pop hit of 1998-“You’re too tenderhearted”. Roger had learned it on the sly, listening for hours to a tape, trying to absorb the pronunciation. He sang it to a crowd of screaming, elated University students in Qufu.
Music Book: “Fiddle Tunes with a Difference”
This book of tunes composed by Roger features many heard on the CD. Written as melody lines with chord symbols, it encourages improvisation on the part of the players.
