Graduates
I've learned so much more than how to play quartets. I've learned about how to deal with people, how to plan rehearsals effectively and so much about communication and expression through music. I feel infinitely lucky to have had the opportunity to work with Karen, Irv, and Leslie.
- Hannah Pressley-cellist, Seattle, age 17 Camp Nirvana 2002, 2003; Chamber Madness 2001-2004
Chamber music has allowed me to connect with my peers in profound ways. These programs have had a deepening affect upon my musicianship by providing me with immense opportunities for musical and personal challenges.
- Emily Cole-violinist, Seattle, age 18 Camp Nirvana 2001, 2003; Chamber Madness 2000-04
Camp-In-A-Day
It was great to actually get to talk to people from other chamber groups. Usually we only come in contact with other groups at competitions, which doesn’t inspire a lot of communication. - (cellist) 2004
I had a great first time! I hope to come again! I learned to smile and communicate with my group, and to use eye-contact. - Helen (violin) 2004
It was a great experience listening to everyone and getting helpful feedback. I learned that communicating and knowing everyone’s part helps to bring the group together and build each other’s confidence. Everyone was so supportive. - 2004
I enjoyed listening to the other groups being critiqued and meeting new people. I also learned more about chamber music playing, and how to stay together better in small groups. - Kristy (viola) 2004
Chamber Music Madness
I loved the workshop; it was a lot of fun. The pieces that we played were really cool, and I liked the kids I was playing with. Thank you for helping me with my bobbing with the beats, it was really helpful. I am so happy to have the opportunity to play in such a wonderful learning environment! My overall playing always increases when I go to any of your chamber music functions. I am looking forward to the next session!
- Katy Williams, Ferndale –Chamber Music Madness, Sept.23 2004
Thanks for everything you've taught me. I love playing my viola now, and I absolutely love quartet music.
- Genevieve, age 17, Chamber Music Madness, Dec.2004
I came out of Madness more energized and enthused than I ever have before...the Mozart K 589 was a refreshingly fun Mozart, and Schubert was SO great, I have decided I want to assemble a group and play the piece in full. My mood was definitely brightened -- thanks!
- Sophie Lippert, Chamber Music Madness, Sept.21 2004
Chamber Music Mini-Madness
Mini Madness was a good experience leading and learning from my mistakes. I learned that as a leader you need to bring the group together. - Mikaela, violinist, Mini Madness, Jan.02, age 13
Once again, we are thrilled Elizabeth is enjoying this unique and wonderful chamber music experience. We feel most grateful to you and the other accomplished teachers. Thank you for letting us listen to all the performers. It's truly heartwarming and inspirational and so much so that we're already looking forward to next round of fund raising!
- Don and Mary, parents, Dec.2004 (Mini Madness)
We appreciate your commitment to the young people who are involved in the wonderful activity of making great music together.
- Lea Ann Miyagawa, June 2004 (mother of a participant in Chamber Music Mini Madness)
Camp Nirvana- Bastyr University
I’ve just realized how much confidence in myself Camp Nirvana replaced for me. It really just allowed me to have fun again and feel confident about my playing. - Seth Thorn, violist, Camp Nirvana 2003, age 18
I learned so much about playing in a quartet and how to communicate and convey emotion in music. - Camp Nirvana 2003, age 16
I’m so grateful to have gotten the chance to share those weeks with you and the rest of the people. In those weeks, I have discovered things about myself as well as others. - Edison Lee, violinist, Camp Nirvana 2003, age 17
I can’t tell you how much I respect you for creating the camp; somewhere where I can truly be myself, and exercise control over myself the way I want to. You are incredible; this camp has affected so many people. - Laura Choi, violinist, Camp Nirvana 2003, age 16
There are no aspects I would change about this camp. The people, experiences, and musical times were all great. I feel that Camp Nirvana changed me as person and a musician within those two short weeks. - Patrick 2004
By letting go of striving for perfection, I am also improving on getting over stage fright. - Ashley 2004
I learned that it’s really important to stick up for my own ideas and feelings while still respecting others. Working in a quartet taught me how to deal with really diverse personalities and how to work out differences. Coachings with Karen, Irv, and Leslie also helped me learn how to achieve rhythmic accuracy, execute convincing phrases, and improve my leadership skills! - Danielle 2004
I met my important goals like rehearsal productivity, sight-reading and having a good attitude. I learned to embrace performances because of Karen and Irv taught me a lot about ‘carpe diem”. Leslie helped me look at my mistakes in a positive light.
I will always give people a ‘second chance” from now on, and I will try not to doubt myself and what I can achieve. - Valerie 2004
Camp Nirvana -Parents
Why would a kid want to attend for the 3rd year in a row? He loved it! Thanks! You’re doing everything right.
- Mark Schlichting (parent of Austin, and also director of Bellingham High School Orchestra program)
Camp Nirvana has created a rare setting in which the teachers discover what each student most needs to develop as a musician. At the same time the students benefit immensely from the close teamwork required to play and perform a high level piece in a chamber group/ensemble. - Mark and Kathryn Johnson, parent
Camp Nirvana was an invaluable experience. The skills learned will be used for the rest of LaShawnta’s life. The final concert was simply awesome. I was shocked at the maturity and the leadership she had developed. She also learned to resolve some conflicts within the group. Camp Nirvana was an experience that I thought was never possible. - Linda Buckner, parent
Expression Enterprises
Your camp gave me more for being a leader in life and in my music than I could have thought possible. - Patrick, Feb.2005
We are glad that Expression Enterprises is going stronger each year. This community is lucky to have you, and we're certainly one of the lucky ones. - Billie Shung, mom of Irwin, March 2005
Congratulations on your graduates! What an impressive list of talented young people. It must feel great to be part of their musical development, education, and most of all, to foster their love for music, and best of all, to show them how much fun music can be. I hope that Laura will joint Chamber Music Madness some day.
- Amy Wong-Freeman, Seattle musician and mother, May 2005
Your enthusiasm is only topped by your talent. Thanks for following your dream and being all that you are to young musicians.
- Karen Hansen, mother; June 2004
Teachers
Karen has been the most influential person in our entire state in developing interest in chamber music playing among young musicians. She has been an outstanding resource for all the state’s teachers and has given workshops in many high schools all over Washington. Her boundless energy and contagious enthusiasm is fueled by the positive response she receives from the students.
- Joanne Donnellan, retired orchestra director, Ferndale High School, Jan.2002
No other musician has meant as much to my students or me as Ms. Iglitzin. Her tireless and passionate efforts to promote chamber music for young musicians have made her invaluable to music education in Washington and throughout the northwest. In all of her varied career paths (professional quartet violinist, university faculty, or chamber music promoter and coach) Karen’s commitment to sharing the joys and insights of chamber music has never changed. She has always been a willing and zealous advocate, ready to spread the word to any open mind. Her reputation for quality and humanity is unparalleled.
- Chip Schooler, orchestra director, Olympia High School, Feb.2002
